THE 2020 SAXX UNDIE HACKATHON:
CHALLENGING DISCOMFORT

SAXX + pHacktory Hackathon: Rethinking underwear

What’s a Hackathon?

A hackathon is an event where a bunch of creative, smart and diverse people get together to try and solve a problem in a new way. People break into teams to put their heads together and come up with the most useful (or weird/wacky/wonderful) idea – and at the end of our Hackathon, we’ll have a panel of expert judges award a series of prizes. Think: your high school science fair, but with way more collaboration, high-tech tools, fun… and cocktails!

All ideas and attendees welcome—no prior hackathon experience required!

So what does this have to do with underwear?

Good question! SAXX is known for challenging the status quo in men’s underwear – we wanted to ask ourselves: how much further can we take this? So, we partnered with scientist Andrew Pelling, and the creative minds at pHacktory and that’s the question we’ll be posing to attendees to solve.

Should underwear be biodegradable? What kind of underwear would Mars colonists need? All great questions worth exploring!

Where is this going down?

We're excited to announce the folks at MakerLabs in East Vancouver have been kind enough to lend us their space to get the creativity flowing. They will also be lending teams some of their tools to use throughout the day (if you’ve ever wanted to work with a 3D printer, Laser Cutter or Soldering Iron… now’s your chance!)

So what does the day look like?

9:30AM: Doors open, breakfast served

10AM: Hackathon Intro, Expert Judges Intro

10:15AM: Group exercise

10:30AM: Coffee break

11AM: Hackathon Begins

12PM: Lunch served (food/beer available)

3PM: Final Pitches

4PM: Wrap Party

4:30PM: Prizes Awarded

Why ELSE should I come?

We can give you five good reasons:

1. The chance to meet/collaborate with interesting people from across Vancouver at a truly unique event – will make a great story to tell your friends later.

2. A day of mind-expanding creativity and fun.

3. Free food, snacks, beer, cocktails – we’ll keep you well-fuelled throughout the day!

4. A chance to meet and learn from our awesome panel of judges, including: Andrew Pelling, Whitecaps FC player and founder of Captains Camps, Jay DeMerit, Open Science Network Society founder Scott Pownall, Marvel Entertainment artist Eric Chan a.k.a. EEPMON, Head Chef and Co-owner of Corduroy Pie Co, Graham Marceau, and of course, SAXX's heads of design,  Kathleen McNally and Adrienne Moser.

5. Live DJ and after-party!
